Message from Dr. Belinda S. Miles: Progress, Recognition, & Achievement – March 3, 2023
March 3, 2023
Colleagues,
Happy Women’s History Month! I look forward to attending events celebrating the many achievements and contributions of women – globally and locally. I encourage you to bring your classes and colleagues to the diverse and informative programs meant to educate, enlighten, and entertain our students and college community. We thank the WHM Committee for planning this year’s events and invite you to check the college’s Events Calendar for a listing of programs around the theme, Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories.
Along with Women’s History Month, March has also brought us winter weather which has not dampened the spirits of our Native Plant Center staff who are busy preparing their 25th anniversary celebrations, extending learning opportunities for home and professional gardeners, and readying our own gardens on the Valhalla campus. Learn more about the Native Plant Center here and check out their native plant pre-sale.
As we prepare for the spring season, please remind students, especially those on target to complete their studies in May or August, that there is an additional 7.5-week session starting on March 20 and that summer registration is underway and offers four sessions: 10-week and 5-week sessions starting May 18; 5-week session starting June 26; and a 3-week online session starting July 31.
Congratulations to our colleagues Crysta Jones, Emmanuel Joseph, Garrett McAlister, Patricia Sehulster, and recent graduate Jelahni Lemonias, who were honored during our Black History Month closing celebration as recipients of 2023 Dr. Julius C. Ford Outstanding Service Awards in recognition of their dedicated service to students, faculty, and staff. Videos from the opening and closing ceremonies are here.
Throughout this month of recognition of achievements by women, take a moment to introduce yourself to and encourage a woman colleague or student. Ask them about their goals and their journey. Share helpful information and insights where you can. As civil rights and women’s rights activist Dorothy Height stated, “We have to improve life, not just for those who have the most skills…but also for and with those who often have so much to give but never get the opportunity.”
