Message from Dr. Belinda S. Miles: Dedication and Achievement – April 19, 2019

Colleagues,
The sun and stars aligned for a beautiful spring weather respite for the 2019 Environmental Symposium and the oak tree dedication for Dr. Joseph Hankin earlier this week. The Symposium, which serves as a perfect prelude to Earth Day on Monday, featured a robust discussion with college and county officials on a range of sustainability topics of both local and global importance.
The dedication of an emergent Red Oak tree was a fitting remembrance for former college president Dr. Hankin, who the Board of Trustees honored this week by approving (posthumously) the college’s first ever Honorary Associate of Arts degree to be conferred this spring. As a reminder, all are welcome to attend a memorial ceremony for Dr. Hankin on Sunday, April 28 at 2:00 p.m. in the Hankin Academic Arts Building Theatre.
We celebrate many student accomplishments this time of year. I extend congratulations to students honored at this year’s College Success Awards Ceremony, those who featured films during our recent Film Festival, those inducted into the Alpha Beta Gamma Business Honor Society, and countless others with noteworthy end-of-year academic achievements and co-curricular activities. Please encourage students to take advantage of our springtime events, with a listing and details on our Event Calendar, and schedule yourself to participate in the Common Read’s 5th annual Run-Walk-Roll on April 24 at 11:00 a.m. There are also a number of cultural events next week including a poetry workshop, Great Books forum, and art and photography exhibits. Your presence at student achievement events and celebrations at this time of year is so very meaningful to our students. I encourage you to attend as your schedule permits.
Finally, there’s one more BIG announcement to come exemplifying the extraordinary achievements of our students and graduates! Stay tuned for more information very soon.
Have a safe and joyous weekend!
Dr. Belinda S. Miles
