Message from Dr. Belinda S. Miles: Achievements & Recognitions – October 26, 2018
October 26, 2018
Colleagues,
Final plans are underway for next Thursday’s college-wide celebration of our achievements and awards. We have many wonderful student success achievements and special recognitions for both students and graduates.
We share our campus with true champions. Four Vikings – Randy Culcay, Mark Naulaguari, Bolaji Akinbowale, and Max Stock – finished in the top 10 as the Cross Country team captured the 2018 Mid-Hudson Conference Championship last Saturday. The win was Westchester’s second championship since the 2016 season. Not to be outdone, our women’s Volleyball team won the Mid-Hudson Conference Championship earlier this week. This was the first conference championship for our volleyball team since 2001 and the first for any women’s sport since 2013! Our top-seeded men’s Soccer team won the first-ever Mid-Hudson Conference Championship game. With the win, the Vikings captured their fourth consecutive Mid-Hudson Conference Championship.
Our men’s Basketball team kicks off its 2018-2019 season on November 2 and our women’s team starts their season on November 6. For highlights, schedules, and information about our teams and more, click https://gowccvikings.com/index.aspx. One of the most exciting things to do on campus is to watch our student athletes compete. Please consider rooting on our Vikings during their seasons and definitely give them a high-five if you see them in class or around campus!
Finally, our alumna, Amanda Gordon, one of our stellar journalism students and co-Editor in Chief of the Viking News, was awarded a Pulitzer Center Student Fellowship. I’m pleased to share that she presented her reporting project (http://www.pulitzercenter.org/blog/watch-live-2018-pulitzer-center-student-fellows-weekend) at the Pulitzer Center Student Fellows event which started today in Washington, D.C.
