Message from Dr. Belinda S. Miles: Moving the Needle
March 23, 2018
Colleagues,
Mother Nature did her best this week to interrupt the teaching, learning, and engagement that occurs at our college. After welcoming faculty and students back from spring break, we cheered on our mascot, Chester, during his first-ever SUNY Mascot Madness competition on a snowy Wednesday. This kind of engagement demonstrates going beyond our workspaces and classrooms to connect. Please continue to check the events calendar and consider bringing your classes to or encouraging students to attend events sponsored by faculty or students, the Westchester Community College Foundation and Native Plant Center, or any number of activities offered at Westchester Community College.
Special thanks to our Physical Plant staff for keeping campus roads and paths clear of snow and ice over this long winter. Our focus on people and place includes fostering a safe and welcoming environment in which to learn and participate. We greatly appreciate members of this team and all staff who keep our operations and processes moving forward.
Today we honored the legacy and legend that is David Swope: College trustee, Foundation board director, and treasured friend and colleague. Many of you knew him personally. Others may know him through his contributions to the campus community. His work here truly spanned our entire community – students, staff, faculty, administrators, volunteers, patrons, fellow board members and trustees. His advocacy for students is unsurpassed. During his long association with Westchester Community College, approximately 70 students received Swope Scholarships and 360,000 students’ lives were impacted by his support of our mission.
Our work here is important. Each of us contributes to the success of our institution as stewards of our mission bringing our best selves to our work to positively impact student success and community engagement. I am so proud of all we do together!
