Message from Dr. Belinda S. Miles – July 8, 2016
At the end of a very difficult week during which many of us witnessed footage of the controversial shootings of civilians in Louisiana and Minnesota, and an attack on police officers in Dallas, we should take the time to reflect. As we pause to digest these disturbing incidents, it is natural to feel an overwhelming sense of hopelessness. It is hard to believe that such events have occurred, especially in this era when so much has been achieved to advance tolerance and understanding.
However, light can sometimes come out of strife. We all have the opportunity to think about our roles, as individuals and as part of a larger institution, in impacting the future in a positive way. “Be the change that you wish to see in the world,” Gandhi once said. In this trying time, we should all consider the many ways that we can help make the world a better place.
Please take solace in the fact that you are part of a larger community that is helping to promote diversity, encourage empowerment, and foster kindness and understanding.
