The SUNY Westchester Peekskill Center for the Digital Arts Gallery is presenting a Student Showcase on view from February 2 through April 26, 2024. The opening reception will be on Thursday, February 22, 2024, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, the public is welcome.
The Student Showcase exhibition is a group show dedicated to the work and efforts of current credit and non-credit students including our alumni who make the arts at the Center for the Digital Arts possible. The gallery will showcase students from across the curriculum who take courses and programs such as Art & Design A.S., Digital Filmmaking A.A.S., ITECH A.A.S., non-credit Workforce Development Certificates, Adobe Certification, and Community Arts. This showcase will provide insight into our offerings and the curriculum that supports them. It’s great to see such a dynamic approach to education and artmaking. This event promises to be an enriching experience for all attendees.
Today’s students are diverse and learn in a myriad of ways including in-person, remote, and HyFlex. These flexible modalities support the increasing demands that our students face in a post covid society. As artists face a complex world with increasing challenges, they also engage with emergent technologies that can amplify their creativity and provide both options and innovation in making. It will be exciting to see what their work looks like now after the pandemic and all that we have learned together. This event is an opportunity to witness the diverse range of artwork created by students and alumni, and to see how emergent technologies have influence their creative processes. It’s especially significant as the Center for the Digital Arts celebrates its 30th Anniversary.
During the Thursday, February 22, 2024 reception, student artists will receive juried awards.
Awards will be given in four categories: 3D, Illustration and 2D Animation, Digital Photography, and Fine Arts. This year’s jurors include faculty members: Joseph Thomas, 3D; Emmanuel Jaquez Reyes; Illustration and 2D Animation; Gerry Katzban, Digital Photography; and Laurel Shute, Fine Arts. There will also be four levels of awards given: First, second, third, and honorable mention. Student awardees of first, second, or third place will receive Amazon gift cards.

Co-creating with AI: Studio Art Practice on the Precipice of the Next Terrain
The SUNY Westchester Peekskill Center for the Digital Arts Gallery is presenting a discussion panel on Co-creating with AI.
Date: October 2024, Date & Time To Be Determined
Click to see the details for this event.
The central question at the heart of the panel discussion revolves around the role of AI in studio art practice. While some may view AI as a potential competitor for artist jobs, the panel proposes a more optimistic perspective—that AI can serve as a co-creator, propelling artistic endeavors to new and innovative heights. The dialogue will delve into the delicate balance between leveraging AI’s capabilities to increase efficiency, automate tasks, and synthesize data, while ensuring that it enhances rather than eclipses the human element in the creative process.
Acknowledging the looming possibility of a future where AI and humans collaborate seamlessly, the panel aims to address concerns about potential pitfalls, such as the generation of algorithmic garbage that could undermine the meaningful output of human artists. The overarching goal is to explore ways in which AI can be harnessed to save time, illuminate new creative pathways, and allow humans to maximize their creative potential.
Ultimately, the panel will scrutinize whether the benefits of co-creating with AI can outweigh the potential costs. By engaging in a thoughtful and nuanced conversation, the discussion aims to contribute valuable insights into the evolving landscape of art and technology, offering attendees a glimpse into the future of collaborative creativity in the age of artificial intelligence.

The gallery showcased the faculty who teach the courses in the Art & Design A.S., ITECH A.A.S., non-credit workforce development certificates, and the Youth Arts Technology program, as well as several of our staff, who don’t all teach, but are also practicing artists who train heavily in arts technology.
The exhibition was a great reflection of the talent behind the curriculum and educational experience at the center as it turns 30 years old. It served as a wonderful prelude to our 30th Anniversary Student Showcase Exhibition.
