ESL
The English, Reading and ESL Department offers two ESL writing courses (ESL94 and ESL122) that support nonnative English speakers matriculating at the College and parallel the developmental writing courses for native speakers. These courses are advanced academic writing courses designed for intermediate to advanced ESL learners placed through the College’s regular placement test. These courses are intended for students whose English writing proficiency must increase before they are able to enroll in ENG101 and other academic subjects that require essay examinations and term papers. Through practice in sentence structure and in planning, writing, and revising essays, students continue to improve writing proficiency in English.
In addition, the Department collaborates with the Communications Department to offer COMM110 Speech Communication for Nonnatives as an alternative to COMM109. This course covers the same content as COMM109 but is taught by an ESL-trained teacher and focuses on speaking/communication issues that are unique to nonnatives interacting in a second language.
