Message from Dr. Belinda S. Miles: Micro-Credentials on the Horizon
October 14, 2022
Colleagues,
This week, our SUNY Westchester Faculty Senate passed resolutions recommending the implementation of a Micro-Credential policy, which the President’s Cabinet will review at its next meeting. This is an opportunity to provide additional workforce responsive pathways for new markets of enrollment populations. This policy, “provides an opportunity for students to enhance and extend their academic experience by earning micro‐credentials that verify, validate, and attest that specific skills and/or competencies have been achieved.”
I share a McKinsey article describing “a hidden talent pool that most employers overlook—the more than 70 million workers in the US who are STARs, or workers ‘skilled through alternative routes.’” Recognizing and valuing employee skills can expand talent pools for in-demand jobs and create even more pathways for advancement within the workforce.
Thanks to all who were involved in creating yet another student-focused pathway to employment and upward mobility through a policy that meets SUNY Westchester’s rigorous academic standards.
Dr. Belinda S. Miles
President
