Message from Dr. Belinda S. Miles – March 25, 2016
Welcome back from spring recess. I know some of you never left, but many of you did, and the campus is not the same without all of our students and faculty moving back and forth among classes and activities. This is a busy time between spring recess and commencement, and I am excited that soon we will celebrate the accomplishments of our latest class of Westchester Community College graduates!
Yesterday I felt part of that excitement at the Phi Theta Kappa induction ceremony where we welcomed 64 new members, and honorary membership was conferred upon Kristy Robinson and me. We also recognized this year’s two 2016 All-New York Academic Team: Maria Isabela Do Couto and Olivia Mata. PTK alum Vitor Granja provided an informative and inspirational keynote address.
Kudos to Professors Marvin Littman, Matthew Sokol, and James Stiehl for organizing the Spring 2016 Math and Computer Science Event that attracted 180 students from local high schools to attend workshops with our faculty. Also congratulations to Professors Laurel Senft, Paul Robinson and Sheela Whelan for receiving the John and Suanne Roueche Faculty Excellence Awards at the 2016 League of Innovation conference this week.
The Faculty Senate invited me as a guest speaker this week, and I was pleased to report on a variety of areas including the new shared governance policy adopted by the board, my outreach to various campus departments, the college budget, and community engagement. I appreciated the opportunity to participate in the meeting.
Thanks for making it a great week.
