Message from Dr. Belinda S. Miles – Viking Proud!
November 3, 2017
Colleagues,
Today we celebrate the resounding return of Westchester Community College men’s basketball and its 101-74 victory over the Monroe College Express team. The energy and excitement in the packed house at the Valhalla gymnasium last night was unmistakable and a natural extension of our strong legacy in collegiate athletics. Just this fall, Cross Country concluded its season with Tom Martorello finishing just shy of the top ten (at number 12) among Division III teams at the Region XV Championships. The Mid-Hudson Conference named women’s volleyball first-year student Madison Young and second-year Alysha Owens to the 2017 All-Conference team. In addition, second-year student Rachel Mendes was named to the Region XV All-Sportsmanship Team. In men’s soccer, Joel Arevalo was voted Mid-Hudson Conference Most Valuable Player. He led the Vikings to its third consecutive Mid-Hudson Conference Championship, and teammates Jamar Gayle, Luis Morales, Mate Mgeladze, and Miguel Perez received honors. This is just the start of a great year for the Vikings!
Thanks to everyone who supports our athletics teams: coaches preparing student athletes for competition, staff maintaining sports facilities, and everyone else rooting for the Vikings. The same gratitude goes out to all faculty, staff, administrators, and volunteers who advise clubs and student organizations and enhance the student experience outside of the classroom. Your involvement and presence makes a difference.
Registration has begun for winter and spring classes. Please encourage our May 2018 candidates for graduation to get a jump on their schedules and secure the classes they need to finish. Also, we appreciate your help in reminding students of the rapidly approaching November 17 deadline to apply for December 2017 graduation. Application information is available on MyWCC.
This is the weekend to turn clocks back and set a reminder to vote on November 7. Have a great weekend!
Dr. Belinda S. Miles
