ESL+; Tutoring for All Levels
Receive one-on-one English tutoring from a volunteer tutor.
Tutors can help you:
- Review and understand classwork
- Practice reading, writing, speaking, and listening
- Build confidence using English

The ELI Writing Clinic
Would you like help improving your writing? Students in Levels 0-5 can meet with a tutor who will review their writing and provide:
- Corrections and suggested edits
- Feedback on grammar and vocabulary
- Explanations of common writing errors
- Practical suggestions writing skills
Please bring a draft of your writing assignment to the appointment.
Extra English Classes for All Levels
Join a weekly class for additional English practice.
The classes may include:
- Grammar review
- Vocabulary development
- Speaking and listening practice
- Reading and writing activities
- Help with topics covered in your regularclasses

For over a year, I have tutored, one-on-one, half a dozen students every week. This tutoring is free. We spend almost two hours for each session and meet at Westchester Community College to review grammar, to check and edit writing assignments, and to read and practice pronunciation. We also discuss material that they may find confusing in their ESL classes or elsewhere. We customize tutoring to meet individual needs. This helps them identify gaps in English and supplements what they learn in their classes. Our goal is to aim higher than their current level so they can advance to the next level of proficiency.
The students not only attend regular classes, but they also have jobs and have family and other commitments. For example, one student works nine hours a day, six days a week, and still completes her homework and attends tutoring every week. Flexibility in scheduling the sessions is important for them. Students have little free time, and yet they come voluntarily for tutoring. They work hard and are quite serious about learning and improving their English. Such dedication is truly inspiring. They are full of hope for their future. I love them all – how can I not!
