The Hidden History of Slavery in New York, Documentary Screening and Discussion

Gateway Center, Davis Auditorium

With Emmy Award Winning Producer Larry Epstein

Larry Epstein is an Emmy-winning documentary producer (formerly of MSNBC and Fox News). His film, The Hidden History of Slavery in New York, won an award at the 67th Annual NY Emmy Awards. The 30-minute documentary explores New York City’s largely untold central role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade, featuring Bryan Stevenson, founder of the Equal Justice Initiative. Stevenson discusses how the slave trade was centered in the North rather than the South, with New Amsterdam and Wall Street playing outsized roles, and speaks to the importance of teaching this history.
