Liberal Arts and Sciences/Social Sciences A.A. – Psychology

A common definition of Psychology often found in textbooks goes something like this… “Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behavior.” However, as Paul Valery points out, Psychology is essentially the study of events, situations, and phenomena (relating to the mind and behavior) that may seem quite familiar since people experience many of them on a regular basis. However, the difference between everyday experiences and Psychology is this: Psychology uses scientific principles and the scientific method to learn about these events, situations, and phenomena.

Sociology examines how the unequal distribution of power impacts the organization of the social world and how individuals experience and are treated in it as they navigate their lives in different social, cultural, economic, and political contexts. As a social science, sociology utilizes various theories and methods to collect empirical data to study patterns that arise in social worlds. Major sub-fields of sociology focus on social issues related to inequalities of race and ethnicity, gender, and social class.
