TEN TIPS FOR COLLEGE SUCCESS

Searched for by students, answered by Westchester Community College experts!

1. Prioritize your education. College is a decision that will shape the rest of your life. Applying is a deliberate choice to join a community of scholars and join a learning tradition over a thousand years old.
2. Do not be afraid to be a new version of you. Community college is one of the greatest self-exploration grounds ever developed. Use this time to gain a stronger understanding of your truest self and explore who you want to be in the world.
3. Forget high school! The things that were cool in high school—pretending not to care about learning, goofing on the teachers, breaking the rules—are not cool in college. The cool thing here is to succeed.
4. Success isn’t about being naturally great. It’s about being consistent. Being consistent and working hard leads to success!
5. Ask lots of questions! There may never be another time in your life when so many knowledgeable individuals are open to answering them. Make a habit of checking your email to make sure you are in communication with your college and support team.
6. Find a mentor or role model to help you A mentor can be a peer, a study partner, a professor, or a staff member at the college who genuinely wants to see you succeed.
7. Don’t be intimidated by new learning formats. Online asynchronous classes help students progress on their own schedule. A new learning format may open your eyes to your academic potential.
8. Asking for help is brave! Talking about your feelings is courageous. College is stressful! It is never too soon, or too late, to learn new coping strategies to help manage stress in healthy and effective ways. Reach out.
9. Commit to your education by investing time into familiarizing yourself with the website, the registration process, and your chosen degree plan. Get to know your advisor. You’ll feel empowered and will be prepared for action every step of the way.
10. Financial aid, opportunity programs, and scholarships can help financeyour education! Apply for financial aid through FAFSA and TAP. Even if you think you are not eligible, you may be surprised. WCC uses financial aid applications to select scholarship recipients, you must apply for financial aid to be considered! Research opportunity programs to see if you are eligible for a supportive program like TRIO, Viking ROADS, the Black & Hispanic Male Initiative, or the Educational Opportunity Program.
