The Orphan Train Era IN-PERSON
The Orphan Train Era saw the largest relocation of children in American history. There were over 35,000 orphaned children living in New York City due to the Great Hunger in Ireland. Many Irish mothers and fathers didn’t survive the voyage to America and their destitute children roamed the streets of New York City. The Children’s Aid Society decided to find homes for the homeless and sent them by rail across America. Over 76 years over 273,000 children were transported by rail across America. The trains also ran in Boston, Chicago and Philadelphia. Scholars believe over 500,000 children rode Orphan Trains across America in search of homes for the homeless.
