Visiting and Non-Matriculated Student Placement

Placement Requirements

Visiting or non-matriculated students are automatically waived into college-level gateway courses (such as introductory English and mathematics) and courses that require these as placement prerequisites.

Students who have already completed the required prerequisite coursework (for example, Precalculus for Calculus) may use transcripts to demonstrate eligibility to register.

The following additional mathematics placement options are available if you plan to register for MATH 161: Precalculus, MATH 181: Calculus I, or select chemistry courses.

Placement Waivers by Standardized Exam Scores

You may qualify for Math 161 or math 181 placement if you meet one of the following score requirements.

Math 161: Precalculus

  • SAT Math 580+
  • ACT Math 25+
  • 80+ on all three NYS Regents Math exams (Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II)

Math 181: Calculus

  • SAT Math 630+
  • ACT Math 28+

Submitting Scores

Unofficial SAT scores may be submitted in person to Admissions or emailed to [email protected]

ACT scores must be sent officially from the testing agency.

Score Validity

  • SAT and ACT scores are valid for 5 years after the test date.
    • Regents scores are valid for 3 years after high school graduation.
Visiting Student Mathematics Placement Waiver Form

Visiting or non-matriculated students who have been approved by their home institution to take a course equivalent to MATH 161: Precalculus or MATH 181: Calculus I may request placement into the corresponding course at SUNY Westchester Community College.

To use this option, download and complete the below Visiting Student Mathematics Placement Waiver Form.

Important:

Please follow the steps below carefully.

  • Section A must be completed by the student.
  • Section B must be completed by an authorized official at your home institution (such as a counselor, registrar, placement center, or math department).
  • The completed form and documentation must be emailed by your institution from an official school email account to [email protected]

Please download and complete one of the following:

Advanced Algebra Functions (AAF) Exam

If you do not meet the placement options listed above, you may schedule and take the Advanced Algebra Functions (AAF) Exam to demonstrate readiness for MATH 161: Precalculus or MATH 181: Calculus I.

Students who plan to register for CHEM 107 or CHEM 111 and have not met the math course prerequisites must take the AAF Exam to demonstrate math readiness.
