IN-PERSON The Great Hunger in Ireland Part 2: Its Legacy in America: The Orphan Train Era (1853-1929) The Orphan Train Era saw the largest migration of children in American history. Over 273,000 children were transported out of New York City by rail in search of homes for the homeless. Because of the Great Hunger in Ireland, by 1852 over 35,000 orphaned Irish children were living in squalor, in sewer pipes and alleyways after arriving in New York City by coffin ships. New York City could be a brutal place for a child. Temperance agencies such as the American Female Guardian Society were the first to come to the aid of children. It was under the leadership of Charles Loring Brace that the Children’s Aid Society was born. CE-HIST 2166, 4 Wed., July 12-Aug. 2, 6:30-8:30 pm, KNC-2, $100. T Riley. #9281
