ELI Newsletter Volume 5

Every class went above and beyond—creating vibrant displays, offering traditional foods and drinks from their chosen countries, and showcasing cultural treasures such as traditional clothing, dances, and music. One class that researched Brazil even built an impressive replica of Christ the Redeemer! Classrooms came alive with balloon arches, colorful door hangings, posters, and photographs.
There was so much creativity and energy on display that it’s impossible to capture it all in words. Hopefully, the photos convey the students’ hard work, talent, and enthusiasm as well as their dedication to celebrating cultures from around the world.
Eliane Game De Almeida, an evening ELI teacher, shared that her class had a wonderful time planning and decorating their classroom. The students discussed various countries before ultimately deciding to present on Ecuador. Reflecting on the experience, Eliane said:
“They learned about Ecuador and found similarities with their own countries. They interacted more with their classmates. Presenting in English to visitors was a big challenge, but I told them it would be fun and that they could read from the posters if needed. They really enjoyed dancing. Some students wore traditional clothes, danced, and they invited the visitors to join them.”
This was indeed the third fair held by the ELI. Andrea Dos Santos, the ELI Saturday Program Coordinator, started the project-based activity in 2023. Andrea initially came up with the idea as a way to build community within her Saturday program and to create opportunities for collaboration between students in different classes and at different proficiency levels. In these fairs, higher-level students designed activities and presentations for lower-level students, helping them learn English in a fun, interactive, and supportive environment.
The first fairs featured pronunciation and listening activities, dance demonstrations, games, and—of course—great food. The fairs were such a success that the ELI administration decided to expand the concept this year to include all programs across the ELI at the Valhalla campus.
