The early twentieth century architecture of Warren and Wetmore helped to shape the built environment of midtown Manhattan. The significance of the firm, mainly known for their co-design of Grand Central Terminal, has gone largely underrecognized among scholars in the field and in the mind of the general public. Many of the surrounding hotels of the period, such as the Commodore, Ritz-Carlton, Belmont and Vanderbilt Hotels, as well as other functional buildings that comprised a “Terminal City” were designed by Warren and Wetmore. Structures such as the Aeolian Building, Chelsea Piers and the New York Yacht Club were also products of the firm. Alan Strauber is adjunct professor of American Architectural History and U.S. History and is Program Coordinator of the Historic Preservation Certificate Program at Westchester Community College.
