About this session and speaker
Cannabis has been used as a medicine for as long as history has been recorded. It was an essential treatment for the ancient Chinese, Egyptian, and the Indian Ayurvedic doctors. The Victorians adopted it into the Western healing arsenal in the mid-1850s and it became an all purpose tonic found in many households until U.S. Prohibition sidelined it in the 1930s. Today, medical cannabis is legal in a majority of US states and an increasing number of countries in Europe and the Americas. This talk will discuss the healing benefits of this much misunderstood plant, the myths surrounding it, and how it is being used to treat common ailments effectively and safely.
Joe Dolce, the author of the book and podcast Brave New Weed, traces the history and future of the plant as he investigates its social, medical, legal and cultural ramifications. Society has undergone a massive shift in perspective that has allowed us to reconsider our beliefs. Dolce has traveled the globe to de-mystify this new frontier, seeking answers to the questions we didn’t know we should ask. From the outlandish stories of murder trials where defendants claimed “insanity due to marijuana consumption” to the groundbreaking success stories about the plant’s impressive medicinal benefits, Dolce paints a fresh and much-needed portrait of cannabis, our changing attitudes toward it, and the brave new direction science and cultural acceptance are leading us.
