The Philosophia Honors Society cordially invites you to a PhiloTalk on
Gender Fluidity in Art
Artists often use portraiture to question or destabilize conventional notions of gender. The contemporary photographer Catherine Opie, the Italian Renaissance artist Donatello, and sculptors serving the ancient Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten are good examples. In this PhiloTalk, we examine gender and portraiture as performative tools that enable artists from different eras to renegotiate their sexual identity and subvert hierarchical structures within societies which view gender as stable.
Book Raffle
At the end of the event, some student attendees will have a chance to win free copies of the book “In Between Subjects” by Amelia Jones.
