Dr. Munshi Sulaiman, who leads BRAC International’s Africa Research from Uganda, will discuss the experience of replicating BRAC’s economic empowerment models in Africa, including its microfinance and adolescent development programs.
From a modest beginning in 1972 as a relief organization after the liberation war of Bangladesh, BRAC has become the largest international NGO (in terms of number of employees) devoted to the economic and social development of marginalized populations, now serving the poorest in 11 countries in Asia and Africa. It is one of few such organizations that originated in the global south and now operates internationally. Dr. Munshi Sulaiman, who leads BRAC International’s Africa Research from Uganda, will discuss the experience of replicating BRAC’s economic empowerment models in Africa, including its microfinance and adolescent development programs.
Dr. Munshi Sulaiman leads BRAC International’s Africa Research from Uganda, and is a Research Advisor at BIGD, BRAC University, Bangladesh. He started his research career at BRAC’s Research and Evaluation Division (RED) in 2004. He previously worked as a Director of Research, Monitoring and Learning at Save the Children and a Research Director of the Social Protection program at Innovation for Poverty Action (IPA). He holds a PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and has been a Post-Doctoral Fellow at Yale University.
