SUMMARY:YES\, YOU CAN! Achieve Significant Social and Political Change\, Legally and Peacefully
DESCRIPTION:Classroom Building\, CLA100 \nEvidence-Based Discussion with Prof. Sheldon Malev \nIn response to unexpected tariffs\, unchecked and increasing inflation\, war\, cost of education\, rising food insecurity and rising unemployment for college grads\, immigration insecurity\, increasing cases of Measles\, a lack of “balance of power” in Washington\, a loss of respect in the US for one another and for the US by other nations\, worldwide\, “resistance groups” have been growing in numbers. College students are becoming more aware of and involved in them. Some would like to be involved but they don’t know what they can do or how to go about it. This seminar might help them do so. \nHarvard researcher\, Erica Chenoweth\, studying government protests around the world in the past century\, found that only a fraction of the population\, 3.5%\, were instrumental in changing the leadership of that country\, and that peaceful protests outnumbered the violent ones in terms of their success. Her conclusion led to\, what is known now as “The 3.5% Rule”. \nWe will discuss what has been learned about peaceful and legal protests\, encouraged by the first amendment to our constitution\, guaranteeing this right to American residents.

SUMMARY:Social Determinants of Health in Westchester County
DESCRIPTION:Health Science Building\, HSC 7 \nHosted by Prof. Sara Fozard \nAlthough Westchester County boasts premier medical institutions and a robust healthcare network\, access to care remains deeply uneven. Beneath its affluent reputation\, disparities persist\, with health outcomes and quality of life strongly shaped by social determinants of health (SDOH). \nThis presentation examines how these non-medical drivers—from housing and transportation to socioeconomic status—directly influence local healthcare availability and service utilization. Drawing on public health assessments\, County Health Department data\, and spatial analysis\, this session offers a comprehensive look at how geography and economic conditions impact long-term well-being across Westchester. \nParticipants will gain a clearer understanding of the structural factors driving regional disparities. Crucially\, attendees will discover how this data can be used to empower residents affected by these SDOH and aid community leaders working to build a more equitable health system for all Westchester County residents.

SUMMARY:The Hidden History of Slavery in New York\, Documentary Screening and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Gateway Center\, Davis Auditorium \nWith Emmy Award Winning Producer Larry Epstein \nLarry Epstein is an Emmy-winning documentary producer (formerly of MSNBC and Fox News). His film\, The Hidden History of Slavery in New York\, won an award at the 67th Annual NY Emmy Awards. The 30-minute documentary explores New York City’s largely untold central role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade\, featuring Bryan Stevenson\, founder of the Equal Justice Initiative. Stevenson discusses how the slave trade was centered in the North rather than the South\, with New Amsterdam and Wall Street playing outsized roles\, and speaks to the importance of teaching this history.
