StepUp: Transition to College
StepUp is a collaboration between Westchester Community College (WCC) and area partner high schools to help prepare students to enter college without the need for remediation. The StepUp program is designed for students who are on track to graduate but likely to place into developmental English and/or Math in their first year of college. Students enroll in a 12th Grade English or Math class (or both) co-developed by high school and college faculty, and if successful, bypass the WCC Placement test and can enroll directly into the next credit bearing course(s).
The StepUp program is generously funded by a grant from the Westchester Community College Foundation and a grant from the Westchester Community Foundation. Each year, WCC recruits three (3) partner high schools, awarding a small two (2) year grant to help with establishing the program at the school. StepUp is designed to replace the senior year math and/or English course thereby minimizing the long-term financial obligation by any school to continue in the program beyond the start-up grant period.
