Message from Dr. Belinda S. Miles: Service & Celebration – June 7, 2019
June 7, 2019
Colleagues,
Last evening, the Westchester Educational Opportunity Center celebrated its 45th Commencement with more than 275 graduates successfully completing academic and vocational programs. Graduates have earned more than 370 certifications—with more expected—including Certified Nurse Assistant, Home Health Aide, Medical Administrative Assistant, Commercial Driver’s License, Patient Care Technician, EKG/Phlebotomy, Security Guard, OSHA 10, Medical Billing and Coding, Pharmacy Technician, and Emergency Medical Technician. Almost 30 students have earned a high school equivalency diploma, with a few on their way to college with scholarship support from the Westchester Community College Foundation.
WEOC’s community impact is significant because it provides access to a strong start in a career or college. It improves economic mobility, which is the topic of this week’s article. Read on for more about how a short-term and non-degree credential can lift an individual’s economic mobility.
Congratulations to the following college employees who were recognized for completing 25 years of service to the County of Westchester and especially to the college: Jose Da Silva, Dr. Gina Gaines, Anthonette Minjo, Dr. Mira Sakrajda, and Prof. Sheela Whelan. This morning’s Award Ceremony, hosted by County Executive George Latimer, was a wonderful celebration of the dedication these honorees and so many of us have for the important work we do.
