2021 State of the College & Foundation Annual Report

03 STATE OF THE COLLEGE 2021 LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT T his Annual Report celebrates not only the achievements of our community through the fall 2020, but the resilience, agility, and empathy of our students, employees and the rest of our college community who were all impacted by the pandemic in one way or another. Our students experienced a lifetime’s worth of hardships in just one year, yet they persisted and stayed on track towards their educational goals. Despite the obstacles they faced, they exemplified the ideals of our college in pursuing education to create a better life for themselves, their families and their community. The dedication and quality of our faculty, with their wide range of accomplishments and acco- lades, has become a standard of our college year after year. But this year our employees exhibited a special kind of agility, successfully and quickly piv- oting the delivery of instruction, counseling and other support services from in-person to remote. During a year of so much turmoil and suffering, empathy was often in short supply across the country. Fortunately, that was not the case in our community. When the needs of our students – lack of technology, lack of finances, lack of food – became apparent, the WCC Foundation and our government officials jumped into action. Hundreds of our students would not have suc- ceeded in their academic pursuits if not for the laptop loaner program, CARES Act funding, the Student Emergency Fund, and food drives. The resilience demonstrated by our community shines a bright light of optimism on our campus. We do not look back at darkness but forward to a re-emergence that will bring greater clarity and focus on our mission. We enter our 75th year with our eyes set on the North Star of our mission – to provide accessible, high-quality and affordable education to meet the needs of our diverse community. Respectfully, Dr. Belinda S. Miles President, Westchester Community College The resilience demonstrated by our community shines a bright light of optimism on our campus. We do not look back at darkness but forward to a re-emergence that will bring greater clarity and focus on our mission.
