Upcoming Spring 2024 Certificate Programs SUNY Westchester Peekskill • 27North Division Street Peekskill NY10566• 914-606-7300 9 Working at the Center for the Digital Arts over the years, I’ve worn several hats. I completed my associate degree in visual arts in Peekskill, then was offered a part-time position as a computer technician due in part to my willingness to help other students while being a student myself. I had the opportunity to work with both students and faculty, assisting in different aspects of various courses. Two years later, I graduated with my BFA in Computer Arts and Technology from Mercy College while working evenings in Peekskill. The timing was perfect since there was a need for someone to teach Game Design for the Summer Youth Arts Technology Program. A former classmate, Chaz Volpe, and I were able to co-teach the class and created an updated syllabus and description with Dr. Sherry Mayo’s guidance. The following summer, the program’s 3D Animation needed an instructor, and I agreed to teach it while Chaz stayed with Game Design. Staff FOCUS I taught the class until the center was able to hire someone with more industry experience. When I found out it was Joe Thomas, whom I knew from Mercy, I knew the students would be in good hands. He even helped develop and currently teaches our adult 3D Animation Certificate. I focused back on the technical side after that, alleviating any needs or issues in the labs and classrooms. In 2017, after working with the Senior Technician in the evening shift for several years, I was informed that she was going to retire and that I was recommended for the position. She felt that I would be a great fit with all that we had covered together, including the evening shift while she was out on leave. That same year, the Lab Manager also planned to retire and the center was looking to hire a replacement. Before I could buckle my newly dawned Senior Technician seatbelt, I was offered the position of Lab Manager. Initially I declined, as I wasn’t sure I could handle the drastic changes so suddenly, but Dr. Mayo and the front office staff reassured me that they had my back, so I accepted. Since then, we’ve made it through a pandemic and developed new offerings, including the Mixed Reality Certificate! Through my time here, we’ve added even more new faces to the Peekskill center team, some with specialized artistic backgrounds, which only reinforces the center as a digital arts presence in Peekskill. —Myron Mock Yen ESL English as a Second Language in Peekskill Level is determined after a placement exam.
