Science-Technology-Engineering-Math (STEM) A National Science Foundation Northeast Consortia for Advanced Integrated Silicon Technologies subaward from SUNY Research Foundation, SUNY Polytechnic University for $176,686 will provide support to upgrade labs, familiarize students with equipment specific to advanced integrated silicon technologies, and inform students of opportunities in this field. A National Science Foundation (NSF) grant for $3 million will increase recruitment, retention, and graduation rates of HSI (Hispanic-Serving Institution) students pursuing STEM studies. The grant also establishes a HSI Resource Hub at SUNY WCC to serve as a catalyst for innovative initiatives at 14 regional SUNY and CUNY Community Colleges. Healthcare A SUNY High Needs Nursing Faculty Grant of $75,000 supports a new nursing faculty member for two years; a SUNY Incremental Funds for New Full-Time Faculty grant of $157,721 also funds a new nursing faculty member for two years. A SUNY High Needs Nursing Simulation Grant of $22,500 supports the purchase of equipment and supplies for coursework involving simulated nursing education. Higher Education Emergency Relief Funding (HEERF) federal funds in the amount $179,656 allowed SUNY WCC to build out a non-credit healthcare lab at our Mount Vernon extension location in response to the high demand for healthcare training. The Children’s Dream Foundation (CDF) provided funding for SUNY WCC’s School of Health Sciences and Wellness to buy a SimJunior simulator. An interactive pediatric simulator, SimJunior represents a six-year-old boy that reproduces a wide range of conditions from a healthy, talking child to an unresponsive, critical patient with no vital signs. This immersive technology will be used to train students in nursing, paramedic, radiologic technology, respiratory care, and first responders, in their education of pediatric emergency care. Con Edison Bright Futures Program Con Edison has been an important SUNY WCC partner for nearly 30 years and for the last ten has supported the extra-curricular Bright Futures Program. Students get an inside look into careers in energy through visits to Con Edison, lectures by visiting experts, and mentorship. Students learn from seasoned professionals, including Anthony “Tony” Suozzo, SUNY WCC adjunct professor and on-site coordinator of Bright Futures. As a former employee of Con Ed for more than 30 years, Tony brings a wealth of practical experience and inspiration to his students. Con Edison renewed its annual Bright Futures $25,000 grant and was this year’s Presenting Sponsor at WCC Foundation’s Transforming Futures Together gala. “By supporting the purchase of this innovative training technology, The Children’s Dream Foundation’s grant will help improve the quality of pediatric care for thousands of children throughout Westchester County.” George W. Contreras, DrPH(c), MEP, MPH, MS, RN, EMTP, Dean of the School of Health Sciences and Wellness at SUNY Westchester “The most important part to teaming up with WCC, is what it gives us in terms of exposing students to be the future at Con Edison, to help lead us to the clean energy future. WCC has been a wonderful partner.” Jane Solnick, Director of Regional & Community Affairs at Con Edison Capital Projects Governor Hochul announced a capital projects grant of $11.5 million for facility upgrades and maintenance.
