Commonly Asked Questions

Online Education Are there different types of online courses? Yes. Some online classes are synchronous, which require students to be present at certain times. Other classes are asynchronous, which are self-paced and do not require students to be present at particular times. Others are a combination of these two methods, and some are hybrid (requiring an online component as well as an inperson component). If you are searching for a particular type of online classes, you can search for classes on mywcc.sunywcc.edu and narrow your search by ‘Mode of Instruction’. For more information about the different types of online classes for fall, and a definition of each type of online class, please see: www.sunywcc.edu/fall When do online courses start? Online classes open one week before the semester starts, but the instructor isn’t present until classes begin. Are there any special requirements for online courses? Classes may have prerequisites, and if so, you’ll need proof that they have been met. Some classes may be hybrid courses. Some – but not all - classes require proctored in-person exams; look for the ‘Online – Asynchronous In-Person or Exam’ notation on MyWCC to identify these classes. For more information about inperson requirements for classes with this notation, please contact the appropriate School (contact info. at www.sunywcc.edu/contact). The other types of online classes do not have these in-person requirements. Are any degrees or certificates offered online? The Medical Billing and Medical Coding certificates can now be completed fully online. In addition, many degrees and certificates can be completed 75%-95% online.
