In general, if you are eligible for to apply for federal aid, you are eligible for student loans. Your loan eligibility is not based on your financial credit. If you are selected for verification, the verification process must be completed before loan eligibility can be evaluated. Once loan has been processed and accepted, it will be posted to your student account. Your tuition, fees and book charges can be deferred immediately even if the funds are not yet disbursed to your account. If your loan covers more than your tuition, fees and book charges, you will receive a refund after your attendance can be verified. If not, you’ll need to pay the difference. I received a Direct Loan through another college. Can I transfer it to WCC? No, loans cannot be transferred from another school. Make sure to add Westchester Community College’s school code (002881) to your FAFSA, and then complete the required loan documents per the instructions on your Financial Aid Portal. Can I take out a student loan on my own with my bank? Any loans which do not require a FAFSA application or meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress standard by the College are private loans. Private (alternative) loans still require school certification. Please bring proof of approval from the lender to financial aid office and check the award status on your account at MYWCC, Student Center just like any other financial aid. However, if you are non-matriculated, the award can’t be posted on your account. Before applying for a private loan, though, you should see if you qualify for any federal or state aid. OTHER SOURCES OF AID How do I apply for scholarships from Westchester Community College? The process for applying for scholarships has changed and is now streamlined as part of the financial aid application process – by applying for Financial Aid, you are now automatically considered for scholarships from the Westchester Community College Foundation as well. To be automatically considered for a scholarship, students must do the following: • All students who are eligible to apply for FAFSA must complete a FAFSA • Undocumented or out of status students who are eligible to apply for the New York State Dream Act must complete the Dream Act application online at: www.hesc.ny.gov/dream • Only students who are NOT eligible for FAFSA or the NYS Dream Act (such as F-1 international students) must complete a separate scholarship application available online www.sunywcc.edu/scholarships
