Commonly Asked Questions

Follow all instructions carefully! Entering wrong information on the FAFSA is one of the most common reasons Financial Aid Awards are delayed. If you need assistance completing the FAFSA, you can call a Federal Student Aid Customer Service Representative at 1-800-4FED-AID (1-800-433-3243). Please note that in addition to applying for federal Financial Aid as described above, New York residents who met the eligibility requirements can apply for New York State aid as well – TAP for full-time students or APTS for part-time students. In order to apply for TAP, the Tuition Assistance Program for New York State, applicants first must fill out a FAFSA, and then must obtain an HESC PIN. To apply for TAP and an HESC Pin number, visit www.hesc.ny.gov. Westchester Community College’s TAP code is 2160. Part-time students from New York State can apply for APTS (Aid for Part-Time Study) if they are eligible – eligibility requirements are outlined on the APTS application, which can be found under the ‘Forms’ section of the Financial Aid website. Please note that the income guidelines are somewhat different than those for TAP. If eligible, students should submit an APTS application and a copy of the appropriate NYS tax return. Applications can be downloaded from the www.sunywcc.edu/finaid ‘Forms’ section. How long does it take for my federal Financial Aid to be awarded? The time required to award your financial aid award will vary. If you were selected for verification, this will lengthen the processing time – please ensure that all of the requested documentation from your “To Do List” has been submitted to the Financial Aid Office. The best way to ensure that your Financial Aid will be processed by the start of the semester is to apply EARLY! What is the status of my financial aid award? How do I view it? Once your financial aid has been awarded, you will be able to view your award on your MyWCC account. Log into MyWCC at mywcc.sunywcc.edu and click on the ‘Student Self-Service Center’ tile and then on the ‘Financial Aid’ tile to view your award. Am I required to accept my financial aid award? Pell grants and scholarships will be automatically accepted, but you need to accept loans. You can accept your aid award under the ‘Financial Aid’ tile in your Student Self-Service Center. What if I don’t see any information on my Financial Aid Portal? If you don’t see information on your ‘Financial Aid’ tile yet, you can check the status of your aid applications on the federal and state websites. To check the status of your FAFSA, go to http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ and click on ‘View your Student Aid Report (SAR), and more.’ To check the status of your TAP, go to www.hesc.ny.gov -> select ‘Pay’-> select ‘Apply for TAP’ -> select ‘Check TAP Status’ -> under TAP information, select ‘Review/Change Your TAP Information’ -> enter your User ID/Pin/SS#. Note that checking the status of your FAFSA and TAP does NOT tell you the amount of your Westchester Community College financial aid award – this is determined after the College’s Office of Student Financial Assistance processes your financial aid package and will appear on the ‘Financial Aid’ tile in your MyWCC account when finalized. You can also reach out to the Financial Aid Office with any questions.
