Commonly Asked Questions

What is the difference between Admissions and Academic Counseling? Admissions Counselors provide support to prospective students who have not applied to the college. They also speak to students about admissions to the College’s 24-credit GED program. After GED students have been admitted and are enrolled in classes by an Admissions counselor for their first semester, they meet with an Academic Counselor going forward. Academic Counselors advise students who have been accepted to the College and have taken the placement surveys (or have submitted the appropriate proof of exemptions). Academic Counselors also advise continuing students who have earned fewer than 31 credits and all students - regardless of the number of credits earned - who have less than a 2.0 GPA. Who do I meet with to discuss the admissions process to the competitive healthcare programs at the College? All new students who have not applied to the college and would like more information about the College’s Health programs should contact the Admissions office. Current WCC students who would like to get more information about the College’s Health programs or who are ready to apply to one of the College’s health programs can meet with ANY Academic Counselor. Students who are in opportunity programs (EOP, TRIO, Viking ROADS, Quest for Success) should meet with their assigned Academic Counselor. What is the Fresh Start Program? For students returning to WCC after a prior unsuccessful start and a lengthy absence. The Fresh Start Program provides eligible students with an opportunity for academic success. To be eligible, the student must not have enrolled for undergraduate courses at SUNY Westchester Community College for at least 2 consecutive years prior to returning. To apply, a student must complete 12 undergraduate academic credits with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 and be matriculated in a degree or certificate program. After completing 12 or more undergraduate academic credits with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0, a student must complete a Fresh Start application and meet with an Academic Counselor. Once approved for a Fresh Start, all of a student’s “D” and “F” grades earned prior to their return are excluded from their cumulative GPA and given asterisks (*) on the transcript. The excluded course grades cannot be re-included later to complete academic requirements. From the forgiveness point forward, the transcript will be marked with the term “Fresh Start”. Caveats: • Fresh Start can be used by each student only once. • An Academic Fresh Start will NOT automatically make a student eligible for financial aid. Please contact the Financial Aid office for further information. • Fresh Start does not apply to any completed degree or certificate. I’ve met with an Academic Counselor, but I need help making my schedule. The College’s Success Navigators are available to assist students with making their schedules – students can either sign into www.sunywcc.edu/helpregister for remote assistance or stop by to see the Success Navigators on the 2nd floor of the Student Center during the hours listed on the site above. What Opportunity Programs are available at the College? Opportunity programs at the College include the following: TRIO Student Support Services: TRIO Student Support Services is a federally funded program sponsored by the US Department of Education. TRIO SSS offers academic assistance to 170 students at SUNY Westchester
