PLACEMENT EXAMS How do I take the placement questionnaires? New matriculated students who have or will have a high school diploma by the time they begin courses at Westchester Community College are being administered two placement questionnaires that they complete at home on a computer or mobile device. One questionnaire is for English and Reading, and the other is for Math. New students are automatically sent the Self-Directed Placement Questionnaires to their College email address one business day after they complete the online ‘Let’s Get Started’ module. If a student does not receive BOTH questionnaires, they should email testingcenter@sunywcc.edu for assistance. Students should also check their spam/junk mail folders. Who needs to take the placement questionnaires? Matriculated Students: All new matriculated students must take the placement questionnaires unless they meet the waiver criteria. Please see www.sunywcc.edu/testingcenter and click on ‘How to Waive the Placement Requirements’ for information on waiver criteria. What is the purpose of the placement questionnaires? The purpose of the placement questionnaires is to provide an opportunity for you to demonstrate that you have the necessary skills to succeed in college and to determine which English, Mathematics and possibly Reading courses you will be taking in your first semester at WCC. You cannot “pass” or “fail,” but it is important that you answer the Questionnaires honestly to be placed into appropriate level courses. When you meet with your counselor you will be able to discuss your long-range goals and plan your course of study. The questionnaires will ask students about their academic history, study habits, and specific course content. For content-based questions, students will first indicate their comfort level with the material before answering related test questions on those topics. Students should be reminded to take their time with the questionnaires and answer all questions to the best of their ability. They should complete the questionnaires in a quiet space where they can focus, without receiving any outside help. For the Math DSP, students may use a calculator to assist them in answering the questions. *Students who have not graduated from high school or earned a GED/HSE diploma and students who possess an IEP diploma will be required to meet certain minimum score requirements on the placement exam (ATB Exam) before being admitted to the New York State Department of Education 24 Credit Hour GED program (see Admissions section) What information will I need to take the placement questionnaires? You will need your 9-digit Westchester Community College Student ID number. This number is emailed to new students after their applications are processed. If you don’t know your student ID number, please email MyWCCHelpdesk@sunywcc.edu
