REMOTE Weddings on Film: A Multinational Perspective At a time when ideas as well as goods flow freely across national borders, the movies are a good place to look for cross-cultural connections. In this two-part series, we’ll be exploring a genre that commands popular appeal around the world: wedding films. The hero in these stories (usually a woman) holds center stage in a drama about romance, relationships, responsibility and sometimes politics. In Session One, we’ll be looking at American varieties of the genre, including The Wedding Planner (2001), Father of the Bride (1950 and 1991), Sex and the City (2008), Bridesmaids (2011), and My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002). In Session Two, we will extend our exploration to examples from India, China, Africa, and the Middle East to understand how the marriage rituals in these lands reflect both local customs and universal ideals of matrimony.
