The
2012 Westchester Vikings are coming off their first Region XV
Championship in 20 years. With a 38-13-1 record they broke the
school record in wins and got national recognition with a ranking of
15th in the nation. This is the highest ranking in school history
at the Division II level. Previously in the 90's when the program
was competing at the Division III level several teams were ranked in the
Top 10 nationally.
The
2012 squad also broke a school record with 9 players making the
All-Region Team. This includes 2012 Region XV Player of the Year
and Mid-Hudson Conference Player of the Year Pat Farina and 2012 Region
XV Pitcher of the Year Alan Carey. Tyler Gurman (RF), Greg Carroll
(P), Justin Palladino (C), Anthony Pertone (2B), Tom Longo (P), Mark
DeMilio (3B), and Luinlly Suazo (SS) were all members of the elite
All-Region Team. Both Pat Farina and Tyler Gurman ranked nationally in
several offensive categories. Pat led the nation in stolen bases with
62, 3rd with 74 runs scored, and 12th in RBI's with 62. Tyler led
the nation with 79 RBI's, 4th in doubles with 23, and 6th in country in
home runs with 13. The Vikings are a Division II team in the NJCAA and compete in Region XV and the Mid-Hudson Conference. The goal every season is to make it to the NJCAA Division II World Series. A bid to the World Series is earned by winning the Region XV Championship Tournament then winning the East District National Tournament. The Vikings have won three Region XV Championships, 1981,1992, and most recently 2012. Westchester has also won the Mid-Hudson Conference crown back to back years in 2011 and 2012. In 1992 Westchester competed in its first ever NJCAA Division III World Series. Each season Westchester plays a 50 game schedule in the spring against NJCAA teams along with several games against four-year JV's and local prep schools. The year starts in September with a 20-30 game exhibition schedule against local four-year and two-year colleges.
The
Vikings have established a tradition of receiving All Conference and All
Region honors with several players going on to earn All American
honors. The exposure afforded to players at Westchester has resulted in numerous scholarship offers from schools all around the Tri-State area.
