Stew Leonard’s and PDC Partnering for Success

In any business, especially one as bustling as Stew
Leonard’s in Yonkers, communication is key. To improve the English language
skills of Spanish-speaking employees at the store, the Human Resources
Coordinator looked to Westchester Community College.
“We had a number of employees who needed the opportunity to
improve their language skills,” she says. “Some of them have direct contact
with customers while others do not. Our employees were excited about the
possibility of improving their knowledge of English so they can advance
within the company.”
During the spring and summer of 2007, sixteen employees
attended on-site English as a Second Language classes twice a week. “We
tailored a program to their needs,” says Harry Horowitz, Director of the
college’s Professional Development Center, which provides education and
training to dozens of corporations and businesses in the county. “We knew
they were looking for an affordable program with a personable, professional
instructor who could teach their employees relevant phrases and concepts in
English.”
