Arborist Certification

Increase your marketability and value to the tree care industry. Owners and employers: your employees can be certified in any of these courses to enhance their professionalism. These programs, certified by the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA), provide credentials to tree care professionals in accordance with OSHA guidelines. Classes are lecture only; hands-on experience to be documented by employer. All classes taught by S Sullivan, Certified Arborist. All classes provide CEU’s for the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) and the TCIA. Textbooks will be provided in class and are available in Spanish.
 

Ground Operations Specialist

Home Inspection Training

Offered in partnership with American Home Inspectors Training (AHIT), we now offer training to prepare for a career in Home Inspection. Get ready to both start and operate your own successful home inspection business or to be a significant contributor in an established company. For those new to the field, our classroom-based training program gets you started. For those already established and looking for professional development opportunities, our online classes make it easy!
 


Classroom-Based Training Program

Our hands-on program will show you how to succeed as a professional home inspector. The courses and field training provide you with a step-by-step process to execute a complete professional home inspection and produce a professional home inspection report. Additionally, the classroom courses provide information on how to start, market and build your own business. Perform actual inspections with our instructors. Curriculum approved by NYS. All classes held in Library Room G-36 (located in the Academic Support Center).

Aug. 24-Sept. 5; Field training begins Sept. 14-18.

Nov. 9-21; Field training begins Dec. 7-11.

Grade D Water Distribution Operator Certification
Approved 15 hour program is the required course for operators seeking a Grade D Certification. Course covers basic hydraulics, operator math, cross connection control, distribution system O&M (leak detection), pipes & joints, valves and other miscellaneous tools and operations. Also covers emergency planning, work zones and trench and job-site safety and water main installation and repair, maps and records. 100% attendance required to sit for exam.

Grade C Water Operator Certification
Approved 18 hour program is the required course for operators seeking a Grade C Certification for systems serving 1000 people or less. Certified Fiber Optics Technician Course (CFOT)
This introductory 3-day fiber optics course is designed for anyone interested in becoming a Certified Fiber Optics Technician. This program prepares the student to take the CFOT (Certified Fiber Optics Technician) test, sanctioned by the FOA (Fiber Optics Association), which is given and graded the final class day. This course also introduces the student to industry standards governing FTTD (Fiber To The Desk), FTTH (Fiber To The Home, LAN/WAN fiber networks), and basic fusion and mechanical splicing. Students will learn how to identify fiber types, recognize various connectors used in fiber installation; and install, terminate, splice, and properly test installed fiber cable to existing standards. This program explores the history and future of fiber optics and fiber optics capabilities, and cost of installation. Standards covered: NECA/FOA-301-2004, EIA/TIA 568-B.3, ANSI/TIA/EIA 607-A, and NEC Article 770-50, Upon successful completion, this program is recognized for BICSI CECs (Continuing Education Credits): RCDD 21, Installer Level/2 Technician 21 CECs.
Suggested Prerequisite: Basic working knowledge of computers. Able to see and identify small items and able to speak and understand the English language.

Certified Fiber Optics Specialist in Testing & Maintenance (CFOS/T)
This 2-day program offers advanced training to anyone involved with the testing and maintenance of fiber optics networks. A focal point in the program is to offer a general, easy to understand, approach to fiber optics testing standards with little theory and considerable hands on activities. This comprehensive program explains the variety of testing standards, equipment and technological approaches used in fiber network testing and splicing and how to choose among them. Subject matter includes a detailed study of ANSI/TIA/EIA-526-14(7)A, OTDR fundamentals and uses, OTDR vs. Insertion Loss Testing, Return Loss Testing, and Attenuation testing using the Power Source and Light Meter. This course is accredited by BICSI for 14 RCDD CECs and 12 Installation CECs.
Prerequisite: CFOT Course or another formal Fiber Optics Training Course within preceding 6 months, or 1 year fiber optics related experience. Must have taken and passed the Basic CFOT Exam prior to registering for CFOS/T with the FOA.

Certified Fiber Optics Splicing Specialist Course (CFOS/S)
This 2-day program provides an overview of OTDR functions and trace understanding. Hands-on classroom activities will provide training in both fusion and mechanical splicing of both single and multi mode fiber optic cables. Both inside and outside plant fiber optic cable types will be utilized along with inside and outside plant enclosures and splice trays. The student will be responsible for successfully making and testing both single mode and multi mode mechanical and fusion splices, as well as being required to correctly and efficiently install spliced fibers into splice trays and trays in enclosures. These enclosures will include both rack and wall mounted splice enclosures, as well as, outside plant enclosures. This program is approved for BICSI CECs (Continuing Education Credits): RCDD 14 CECs and INS, Level 2/Technician 14 CECs.
Suggested Prerequisite: CFOT Course or another formal Fiber Optics Training course within preceding 6 months, or 1 year fiber optics related experience, specifically experience with fiber preparation, termination, and testing and a thorough knowledge of fiber optic safety practices.
Note: Anyone can attend this program. However, those wishing to become registered with the FOA as a Certified Fiber Optic Specialist in Splicing (CFOS/S) must have taken and passed the Basic CFOT Exam.

Building Analyst Training and Envelope Professional Training

This low cost training program can bring your company for years to come. While using building science technology to help customers solve heating, cooling and air leakage problems that are driving high energy costs, you will also provide them with a more comfortable, safe and durable home. You will also be part of an exclusive group of contractors with access to benefits to help your business grow. 

Building Analyst Training

This training program will help your employees prepare for BPI’s Building Analyst written and field tests, and will open your eyes to a new way of thinking about residential buildings. As a contractor, you will come to understand how the house works as a system, why some homes fail, and how to use the latest building science technology to help resolve residential heating, cooling, base load and air leakage problems. By using a “whole house” performance-based approach, you’ll address a comprehensive range of interrelated building issues and be able to provide your clients with a more comfortable, safe, durable and energy-efficient home.

4 days of classroom instruction/2 days of field training (36 instructional hours total)
7-hour sessions (including meal and breaks)  

Registration Information

The cost of this training is $1,245. This includes all course materials (excluding the BPI exam). NYSERDA reimburses 75-100% of the fee upon completion of the course to qualified students in the NY System Benefits Charge utility territories. Your level of reimbursement is dependent upon the location in which you perform work under the New York Energy Smart™ programs. This incentive program is being offered by NYSERDA for a limited time. You must complete the entire course to receive Proof of Participation and reimbursement.
 

Envelope Professional Training

This training, which includes both classroom sessions and field experience, will help you

prepare for the Building Performance Institute’s Envelope Professional written and field

exams. Training will include review of some Building Analyst topics, but is not a BA

preparatory course. BA certification or BA training is a prerequisite for Envelope Professional training. Qualifying candidates may make special arrangements with BPI to take both tests simultaneously.
