Program Offerings

The Educational Opportunity Center offers the following programs in Yonkers and at two off site locations where listed:


Developmental Programs:

Academic and Vocational Prep (AVP)
This program is designed to improve students' reading, language arts and math skills by two to three grade levels, to qualify them for advancement into the vocational or academic program of their choice.  The self-paced program uses computer-assisted instruction as a means of individualizing lessons for each student.  This program is offered during the day.

Courses include: Reading, Writing, and Math.

English as a Second Language (ESL)
This multi-level program is designed to teach basic English literacy skills to non-native speakers of English through an integrated skills approach and to provide the cultural information students need to manage everyday life situations.  Through the use of C.A.L.L. (Computer Assisted Language Learning) students can further improve their skills in our state of the art language lab, at their own pace. 

This program is offered in both the day and evening. Courses include: Basic English Literacy, Reading/Grammar/Writing/Life Skills, and Oral Communications.

Pre-General Educational Development (Pre-GED)
This program is designed to help students develop the skills needed to enter into the General Educational Development (GED) program, to prepare for the high school equivalency exam. Students will build their basic reading, writing and math skills to advance them toward their goal of attaining a high school diploma.  This is a self-paced program which utilizes computer-assisted instruction to help individualize instruction for students.  This program is offered during the day.

Courses include: Reading, Writing, and Math. Science and Social Studies content are incorporated into primary course offerings.

Pre-Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL)
This multi-level program is designed to teach English language skills to non-native speakers of English to help them develop the skills that are required to enter vocational programs, GED preparatory courses, enroll in college or obtain gainful employment.  Grammar and reading are taught in a vocational context in order to familiarize the students with the vocabulary necessary to succeed in the vocational training programs as well as to obtain gainful employment.  Through the use of C.A.L.L. (Computer Assisted Language Learning) students can further improve their skills in our state-of-the-art language lab, at their own pace.  This program is offered in both the day and evening.

Courses include: Grammar/Writing/Life Skills, and Reading/Vocabulary/Work Skills.

General Educational Development (GED) – Day and Evening
This program is designed to help students pass the high school equivalency (GED) Test.  Students will enhance their basic reading, writing and math skills to advance them toward their goal of attaining a high school diploma. This is a self-paced program which utilizes computer-assisted instruction to help individualize instruction for students.  This program is offered in both the day and evening.

Courses include: Reading, Writing, and Math.

College Preparatory Academy
This program is designed to help students develop the academic skills to enter into and succeed in college. Students receive instruction in reading, writing and math, and are prepared to take the placement exam.  Weekly workshops are offered to help students develop and reevaluate career plans, and develop note-taking, time management, study and test-taking skills.  Students also receive assistance in applying to college and completing financial aid applications.  Additionally, students receive 24 hours of financial literacy instruction through the Financing Your Independence curriculum.  A typical week includes 15 hours of instruction and two to four hours of workshops. 

Courses include: Reading, Writing and Math.

Vocational Programs:

Health Programs

Certified Nurse Aide (CNA)
This program is designed to prepare students to meet the requirements to take the state test to become Certified Nurse Aides. Students will focus on learning the body systems and related disorders, in addition to vocabulary appropriate to the health occupations. Generally, the students will be able to apply the principles of efficient care for patients of varying ages and explain the therapeutic techniques for managing specific behaviors. This New York State-approved program covers the basics of personal care for the elderly, and patient care for those in nursing homes and hospitals, including appropriate bed-making, feeding and monitoring of vital signs.  This program is offered in both the day and evening.  Additionally, it is offered in Peekskill and Spring Valley in the day.

Courses include: Anatomy & Physiology, and Fundamentals of Patient Care.

Certified Nurse Aide & Home Health Aide Combined (CNA/HHA)
This program is designed to prepare students to meet the requirements to take the state test to become Certified Nurse Aides, and to develop skills to become a Home Health Aide. As with the Certified Nurses Aide program,  students will learn related medical terms, abbreviations, main function of each body system, and generally be able to apply nursing theory to nursing practice. They will cover the basics of personal care for the elderly and patient care for those in nursing homes and hospitals.  Additionally, students will learn the essentials of home and personal care, including basic housekeeping, feeding and bathing, in order to assist the elderly and home-bound in their homes. Clinical supervised work experience is included. This program is offered in the day.

Courses include: Anatomy & Physiology, Fundamentals of Patient Care, and Nutrition.

Direct Care/Support Professional (DCSP)
The Direct Care/Support Professional program is a six-week training program that prepares students for entry level jobs working with mentally, physically and developmentally disabled individuals in residential facilities or other institutional settings. This program leads to certification as a 
Direct Care Service Worker. Students completing the program also receive Approved Medication Administration Personnel (AMAP), Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention-Revised (SCIP-R), and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certifications. This program is offered in the day.

Courses include: Direct Care Service Worker Immersion, AMAP, SCIP-R, CPR and First Aid, and World of Work.

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)– Day and Evening
This program is designed to prepare students to meet the requirements to take the state test to become Emergency Medical Technicians. Students will be able to demonstrate the appropriate and required procedures for responding to medical emergencies and crises, in addition to learning CPR and defibrillation. This New York State-approved program in practical emergency techniques also provides students with driver's education, enabling them to pass a road test in a non-passenger vehicle.  This program is offered in both the day and evening.

Courses include: Emergency Medical Technician, Driver's Education, and World of Work.

Home Health Aide/Personal Care Aide
This program is designed to help students gain employment as Home Health Aides or Home Health Aide Assistants. Students learn the essentials of home and personal care, including basic housekeeping, feeding and bathing, in order to assist the elderly and home-bound in their homes. It includes the option of a paid Home Health clinical experience.  This program is offered in the day.  Additionally it is offered in Peekskill and Spring Valley.

Courses include: Fundamentals of Patient Care for Home Health Aides, Anatomy & Physiology for Home Health Aides, and Nutrition.

Pharmacy Technician
The Pharmacy Technician program prepares students to sit for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Certification Exam.   Students develop an understanding of the role of the Pharmacy Technician in assisting the Pharmacist in serving patients; learn to maintain medication and inventory control systems; participate in the administration and management of the pharmacy practice.  This program is offered in the day.

Courses include: Introduction to Pharmacy Technician, Pharmacy Technician I, and Fundamentals of Pharmacology for the Pharmacy Technician.  This program includes a four-week externship in a pharmacy.

  Business Programs

Basic Computer Applications
This vocational program is geared to those who wish to upgrade themselves in an existing job, or to make themselves more marketable to  a prospective employer upon completion of the program.  The program consists of three computer applications software courses, in addition to Introduction to Windows and Keyboarding courses for students having little or no Windows and/or keyboarding experience (which is a prerequisite for the three application courses). Students will develop their skills in creating and formatting documents, registries, invoices and inventories.

Courses include: Introduction to Keyboarding, Introduction to Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Word I and II, and Microsoft Excel.  This program is offered in both the day and evening.

Medical Coding & Billing
The Medical Coding & Billing program prepares students for entry level jobs in HMO’s, doctors’ offices, hospitals, and other health providers as medical billers and coders.  This 17 week program (day) and 26 week program (evening) offers instruction in anatomy and physiology and related diseases, and appropriate medical terminology.  Students learn the latest computer software with a focus on procedures in a medical environment:  medical coding & billing, medical records, insurance claims and medical transcription in medical settings.  This program is offered in the day.

Courses include: Medical Coding & Billing I and II, Medical Terminology I and II, Anatomy & Diseases, Microsoft Word and Excel, and World of Work.  This program includes a four-week internship.

Microsoft Office Specialist
This program is designed to prepare students to secure secretarial and administrative jobs in various companies. This program provides instruction in Microsoft Office Suite, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Power Point, and Microsoft Office Integration with a focus on procedures in an office environment. Students are provided with internships in the private or public sector.  This program is offered in the day.
