The Big Read in Westchester
Westchester Art Council

The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest. Westchester Arts Council, in partnership with Westchester Library System and Westchester Community College, brings The Big Read to Westchester. Special thanks to our community partners: Hudson Valley Writers Center, The Links, Westchester County Youth Bureau, Youth Theatre Interactions, and Mara Mills

This project is to promote reading, the chosen book being Ernest Gaines’ novel,A Lesson Before Dying.”  The following activities are Westchester Community College’s initiatives in the program.

Radio Broadcast

A student discussion on Gaines’ novel will be broadcasted. The radio station will be open for phone in callers to make literary comments/questions. For more information contact Rademes Ocasio at 914-606-6752.

Literary Readings

Read-A-Loud

Classroom Bldg - Room 200 
Faculty, staff, students and community members are invited to read passages from the novel.

Dramatic Stage Readings
Tue. Mar 10  //  8:00 pm
Classroom Bldg - Room 200
Professional actors will give dramatic readings from Romulus Linney’s play based on Gaines’ novel.(This event is free and open to the public.)

Screening of Film
Wed  Feb 25   //  11:00 am
Classroom Bldg - Room 200
The screening of the Emmy Award winning film version of “A Lesson Before Dying” will take place during common hour.
