TDC53 and TDC22007,
two annual international juried exhibitions
recognizing excellence in the use of typography,
calligraphy, handlettering and other letterforms
organized by The Type Directors Club in New
York, will be traveling to the Westchester
Community College Fine Arts Gallery in Valhalla,
NY. The exhibition will run from Monday, March
17 through Saturday, April 18, 2008.
TDC53, the 53rd annual
juried exhibition of applied typography,
attracted 2,043 entries from 34 countries. The
exhibition consists of 215 pieces from 20
countries, including Australia, Bulgaria,
Brazil, Canada, China, Croatia, England,
Germany, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan,
Mexico, The Netherlands, Portugal, Singapore,
South Korea, Spain, and Switzerland.
The exhibition jury for TDC
53 was comprised of Marion Bantjes (British
Columbia, Canada), Len Cheeseman (New Zealand),
Deanne Cheuk (New York), Bruce Licher
(Independent Project Records and Press,
Arizona), John Pobojewski (Thirst, Chicago,
Illinois), Paul Sahre (The Office of Paul Sahre,
New York), and Armin Vit, (Under Consideration,
New York). Number Seventeen of New York designed
both the TDC53 Call for Entries as well as the
exhibition catalogue Typography 28, published by
Collins Design, an imprint of HarperCollins
Publishers.

exhibition chair Graham Clifford stated
“It was a great honor to be chair, however, I
was not prepared for the incredibly high
standard of over 2,000 entries from 34
countries. I look forward to seeing all the
winning work in one place at one time with our
traveling exhibitions and in the annual
,Typography 28, designed by Number Seventeen.”
TDC22007, an
annual juried exhibition of
original type designs, attracted141
typeface entries from 23 countries. 19 typefaces
were selected. They included Subtil (Hanno
Bennertand Alexander Gialouris, Germany); Olga
(Christina Bell, Germany); Beorcana (Carl
Crossgrove, United States); Fakir (Underware,
The Netherlands); Xtra Sans (Jarno Lukkarila
(Finland); Tisa (Mitja Miklavviv, Slovenia); EMT
Lorena (Eduardo Manso, Spain); Nassim (Titus
Nemeth, Austria); Amo Pro (Robert Slimbach,
United States); Midan (Kameel Hawa, Lebanon);
Gregoria (Elena Albertoni, Germany); Flexion
(John Langdon, United States); Peanut (Michael
Clark, United States); Quiosco (Cyrus Highsmith,
United States); Greta Text (Peter Bilak, The
Netherlands); Manicotti (David Jonathan Ross,
United States); Palatino Sans (Herman Zapf and
Akira Kobayshi, Germany); Corundum Text and
ºUntitled’(Joshua Darden, United States).
The jury for TDC22007consisted
of Luc(as) deGroot (Germany); Rod McDonald
(Canada), Sumner Stone (United States), and
Maxim Zhukov (United States). The members of the
ad-hoc TDC Non-Latin Advisory Board who provided
their analysis of the non-Latin designs to the
judges of TDC2 2007 were: Gayaneh Bagdasaryan
(Russia); Misha Beletsky (U.S.); Martin Heijdra
(U.S.); John Hudson (Canada); Gerry Leonidas
(U.K.), Manvel Shmavonyan (Armenia); Huda
Smitshuijzen AbiFarès (The Netherlands); and
Vladimir Yefimov (Russia).
Dennis Pasternak, chair of
TDC22007stated “this year there were
a large number of submissions covering all
categories. It was quite inspiring to experience
such a great number of original, highly
sophisticated and well-crafted type designs
presented at one time and in one place. New and
exciting type design appears to be alive and
well worldwide.
The Type Directors Club is
a non-profit international professional
organization founded in 1946 and dedicated to
offering its members events, information, and
opportunities centered on type: its history, its
design, its power in communication, and its
future role in ever-changing media. For sixty
years TDC has sponsored its international
competition focusing on typographic excellence
in design. For the past ten years, the TDC2
competition was created to provide a separate
judging for typeface design.
