POETS & WRITERS – AVA CHIN

Ava Chin reveals the joys of foraging in her award winning book Eating Wildly: Foraging for Life, Love, and the Perfect Meal (Simon and Schuster). Library Journal chose Eating Wildly as one of the “Best Books of 2014” and the Huffington Post named Ava one of “9 Contemporary Authors You Should Be Reading.” She was recently featured on PBS’ Victory Garden for a segment on urban foraging in NYC. In this memoir, Chin finds herself lonely and single at 39. Determined not to settle for Mr. Wrong but uncertain how to create a satisfying life on her own, she finds the answer in her “foraging eyes,” a way of adjusting her gaze to perceive what’s actually in the landscape rather than what she hopes to find. Ava immerses herself in places like Prospect and Central Parks—discovering delectable mushrooms and mulberries, saving a swarm of wild honeybees, and meeting fellow foragers along the way. As the seasons turn, she starts to see the world as a place of abundance and beauty, where everything is interconnected and interdependent, and timing is key (The New York Times Book Review). And the book includes recipes!
Dr. Chin is an Associate Professor of Creative Writing and Journalism at Staten Island/CUNY. www.avachin.com
