Background Information:
I was born and grew up in Britain. After teaching mathematics at a secondary school in Manchester, England, I went to Kenya where I taught at a girls' high school in Nairobi, and then at a boys' high school on the island of Lamu in the Indian Ocean. My two children were born in Kenya and our family continues to be very interested in Africa in general and Kenya in particular. I came to the United States in 1982. I was teaching mathematics in Maryland when a colleague persuaded me to take a computer programming course, and I found I
loved computer science as much as mathematics. I started teaching at Westchester Community College in 1991. My particular interests within the discipline are improving our pedagogy and other techniques to enable more students to discover how interesting and fun the study of mathematics is. I am particularly interested in attracting more women and underrepresented minorities into mathematics and computer science, hoping that they will find it as fascinating and enjoyable as I do. I love teaching at this community college with its
population that is so diverse in every way. Other activities that I enjoy are politics, needlework, gardening and reading novels. |
