MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
A mathematics educator once said, “Mathematics has the quality of starlight - beautiful but distant and cold.” We do not agree. The people involved in the way mathematics is learned and taught may well determine how we feel about a subject that some have come to fear. We well understand that some folks have “Math Anxiety”.
Let me reduce those fears and briefly introduce the Mathematics Department at SUNY Westchester Community College. Having both on and off campus opportunities as well as traditional “in-class” and online work, we offer a thorough set of challenging and exciting preparatory courses needed to upgrade students’ backgrounds. Students may then acquire strong quantitative skills for moving ahead in mathematics, for transfer, for the pursuit of scientific/technical/educational careers, and
for satisfying requirements for future transfer majors in pure mathematics, computer science, engineering, natural sciences, social sciences, business, finance, and mathematics education.
After placement testing and a review of student records, we have a program that offers carefully designed developmental courses [Prealgebra and Beginning Algebra] as well as college-level courses such as Math for Elementary Teachers, Nature of Mathematics, Elements of Geometry, Statistics, Development of Mathematical Thought, Finite Mathematics, Algebra and Trigonometry, Precalculus, and three levels of Calculus, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Discrete Math, and Honors
Mathematics. All entering students may enroll in our Fall, Spring, and two Summer Sessions. [High School seniors are also encouraged to take - concurrently - our college level math courses while attending high school.]
We host a really fine Mathematics Tutorial Center and an Academic Support Center that will enable students to find excellent tutorial assistance for all of our courses. We have a Math Club and an internationally recognized Math Modeling Team that has competed successfully since 1991, winning Honorable Mention and Meritorious Distinction. Some of our recent graduates have transferred to colleges such as SUNY Purchase, SUNY Oneonta, Columbia, Cornell, NYU, RPI, Manhattan College and
Pace University, among many other institutions.
At Westchester Community College you have the opportunity to interact with highly qualified, experienced professors who are distinguished in their field. Students can be assured of a very high level of educational quality.
We look forward to meeting you, strengthening your opportunities and backgrounds, and stimulating your interest, skills, and growth in the important and magnificently beautiful subject of mathematics.
