Welcome to Westchester Community College’s School of Health Careers, Technology and Applied Learning.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (2016) employment in healthcare is projected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations, adding about 2.3 million new jobs. That is, careers in the health field will add more jobs than any other group of occupation.
Please take a good look at the many programs offered in the School of Health Careers, Technology and Applied Learning. All of the programs in the School provide hands-on learning opportunities to accompany the classroom experience. The School is composed of five departments, each providing different options and a specialized pathway to a career in health.
In addition to providing students with instruction in a range of sports and fitness activities, the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Human Performance prepares students in the field of health education and wellness. A new Certificate in Personal Training provides course work and training to qualify as a personal trainer or fitness instructor, and sit for the certification exam through the National Council on Strength and Fitness (NCSF). The Certificate prepares you to work with clients of all ages in multiple aspects of wellness including: exercise, general health, nutrition, and athletic performance.
The Department of Culinary Arts, Hospitality, Nutrition and Dietetics has numerous career pathways. The A.A.S. in Dietetic Technician (Nutrition Care) provides credentialing as a dietetic technician, a professional trained as an integral part of a healthcare and food service management team to deliver safe, culturally competent, quality food and nutrition services. The dietetic technician program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND). The A.S. in Foods and Nutrition program prepares students to transfer from Westchester Community College into a baccalaureate program with an area of specialization in nutrition and/or dietetics including training for a career as a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist. The A.A.S in Culinary Arts & Management leads to careers in the hospitality and restaurant industry. Graduates are employed as chefs, supervisors of food production and service, event planners, caterers, stewards, banquet managers, purchasing agents, and bakers.
The two-year Associate Degree (A.A.S.) in Nursing (ADN) prepares students for entry into the field of professional nursing. Graduates are prepared to provide bedside and related specialized nursing care in hospitals, homes, clinics, and long-term care facilities. Upon successful completion of the nursing program, graduates are eligible for licensure as Registered Professional Nurses. The School is very proud of the many articulation agreements and dual or concurrent degree pathways for students who wish to pursue the baccalaureate in Nursing at a four-year institution.
The Department of Allied Health has A.A.S. programs in Respiratory Care, Radiologic Technology and Paramedics. The Respiratory Care Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC). The Respiratory Therapist is a life support specialist, and an integral part of the intensive care team for patients of all ages. Accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT), the Radiologic Technology program prepares students to perform diagnostic imaging procedures, such as X-ray examinations, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and computed tomography (CT) scans. The Paramedic program prepares students for a career as a paramedic, the most advanced pre-hospital emergency medical service provider. Students begin their emergency medical education by becoming credentialed as an Emergency Medical Technician. The Department also houses a certificate program in Medical Coding and Billing, where you can train to become an administrative support specialist who works in hospitals, clinics, medical offices, or insurance organizations.
Accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association’s Committee of Veterinary Technician Education and Activities, the A.A.S in Veterinary Technology focuses on applying basic animal science, biological testing and the study of animal behavior to assist the veterinarian in the care and health of animals. This program will expose students to a variety of animal species and prepare students for employment in a variety of animal-related settings including veterinary hospitals, clinics and small offices, animal shelters and humane societies.
