LAS Social Science
Welcome to the Liberal Arts and Sciences: Social Science curriculum, a degree program that attracts more students than any other at the Westchester Community College. The popularity of this degree program is directly related to its utility for transfer. Over 85% of our graduated students transfer to 4-year degree programs. The intent of the program is to expose students to a wide variety of social science approaches and encourages an exploration of all the disciplines offered in the Social Sciences Department (Anthropology, Economics, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology) to understand the enduring features of human life. The courses in our curriculum are built in and around the educational goals of understanding our past and present as a species, evaluating cultural innovations, exploring human behavior, analyzing economic and political societies, and evaluating individual responses to a variety of cultural and the natural environments.
The LAS: Social Science degree is aligned with the SUNY Transfer Pathways Initiative and provides an option for students to either pursue concentrations within the Social Science Department or focus on the general Associate degree. Both choices offer excellent transfer opportunities to a wide range of 4-year degree programs with the general degree allowing transfer to programs in Social Sciences, Business, Education, Natural Sciences, and Humanities. If students select a degree with a specific concentration, (Anthropology, Economics, Psychology, or Sociology), the degree requirements at Westchester Community College will mimic the first two years of a 4-year program in those fields allowing students to have upper level status in those degrees upon transfer.
In the end, our curriculum provides the foundational courses needed and sufficient credits to complete a bachelor’s degree with just two additional years of full-time study.
