Department of Physical Sciences Description and Courses
The Physical Sciences Department as SUNY/Westchester Community College offers physics and other elective science classes with and without a laboratory component. A list of the department’s course offerings is listed below. Most classes are designed to transfer to all 4-year Baccalaureate programs. Summary of Physics Courses
- PHYSC 101 Technical Physics 1 and PHYSC 102 Technical Physics 2 are both 3-credit lab science physics classes that are taken by students that are enrolled in Civil Technology AAS, Electrical Technology AAS, and Mechanical Technology AAS curriculum programs. The pre-requisites for PHYSC 101 Technical Physics 1 are MATH 131 – Technical Mathematics, and MATH 135 – College Algebra with Trigonometry, or equivalent. Prerequisite for PHYSC 102 is PHYSC 101.
- PHYSC 111 College Physics 1 and PHYSC 112 College Physics 2 are both 4-credit, lab science, algebra-based physics classes. The pre-requisite for PHYSC 111 College Physics 1 is MATH 135 – College Algebra with Trigonometry, or equivalent. Prerequisite for PHYSC 111 is PHYSC 112.
- PHYSC 121 Engineering Physics 1 and PHYSC 122 Engineering Physics 2 are both 5-credit, lab science calculus-based physics classes. The pre-requisite for PHYSC 121 Engineering Physics 1 is MATH 161 – Precalculus, or equivalent, and the co-requisite is MATH 181 – Calculus 1.
Summary of Elective Classes
- The Physical Sciences Department offers elective lab and non-lab courses in a wide range of physical sciences disciplines – geology, astronomy, planetary science, weather and forecasting, climate change, oceanography, physical geography, energy. The Department also offers three honors courses: PHYSC 143H Earth Science (“honors-option”, with lab), PHYSC 154H Life in the Universe, and PHYSC 134H Science, Pseudoscience, and Critical Thinking. There are two online courses offered by the Department, PHYSC 120 Physical Science Explorations, and PHYSC 143 Earth Science (this course has a mandatory, weekly, on-campus lab).
