Jay Dollinger's Experience

On July 8th, 8 students and our faculty advisor, Dr. Frank Madden, met at Kennedy Airport to begin a 10 day extraordinary adventure.  Perhaps out of necessity, perhaps out of fear, perhaps it was out of sheer curiosity, but we all bonded as one new large and extended family. We were joined by two other of our students arriving from different parts of the world or on different flights at London’s Heathrow Airport, and they, too, were pulled immediately into this family.  The logistical support we received prior to our departure from the English and Honors departments, as well as Dr. Madden’s literary preparations, made us all confident in our abilities to represent ourselves and our school in an outstanding fashion.

For the next ten days our experiences, both in and out of the classrooms, were those that none of us would soon, or ever, forget.  There were lively classroom discussions with a world renowned Shakespearean scholar, Shakespeare productions al fresco in one of the College’s gardens, optional excursions, the chance to meet students from over 48 countries world wide, medieval architecture, winding rivers, great shopping, super pubs, awesome restaurants, and much, much more. With ample time for lunch and between classes, most of us were able to forge relationships with these other international scholars that span the globe; not to mention those relationships we formed amongst ourselves. Somewhere in there we all came away scholars ourselves in each of our specialties. I can’t wait to go back.
