Physical Education Course
Descriptions
The philosophy of the Physical Education program is to
encourage student participation in a variety of activities, especially those
involving new skills. Activities are designed for beginners, unless
otherwise described. A student skilled in an activity is advised to select
an activity in which he or she is not skilled. The Physical Education
Department advocates emphasis on individual sports and fitness programs that
have carry-over values beyond the student’s school years.
Many students with disabilities participate in physical
education. The Physical Education Department Chair can arrange an adapted
program to suit students with special needs.
Each candidate for the A.A., A.S., and A.A.S. degrees
is required to earn one sports credit and one health/fitness credit. Courses
listed under the Combination heading can be used to satisfy either of these
credit requirements. Students can satisfy the Physical Education
requirements either by taking a combination of courses from the following
lists or by taking PEC 110 Health & Sports for Life, which awards one of
each of the required credits.

is on the development and reinforcement of behaviors that contribute to
optimum health and fitness throughout life. Students analyze their
health/fitness status and develop prescriptions for positive lifestyle
changes. The sports component is designed for both the physically
challenged and physically able individual. Students explore and develop
an understanding of the nature of sports and learn to appreciate those
