PIANIST GEORGE WINSTON PERFORMS AT WESTCHESTER COMMUNITY COLLEGE ON
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 31
Westchester Community College presents a solo piano concert by the
incomparable George Winston on Halloween night on Friday, October 31 at 8:00
p.m. in the Academic Arts Theatre on the Valhalla
campus. The Grammy winner plays over 100 solo piano concerts a year in America and
beyond, inspired by the seasons. These concerts feature a variety of styles,
including melodic folk, stride, and
New Orleans R&B. His pieces include Vince Guaraldi’s
Peanuts compositions and more.
Winston’s solo piano shows (Summer and Winter) are
always in a state of evolution. He has seven multi-platinum and gold records
and his latest CD is Gulf Coast Blues
and Impressions- a Hurricane
Relief Benefit. The pianist’s
main influences on the piano are Fats Waller, Teddy Wilson, Professor
Longhair, Henry Butler and especially the late James Booker. He is now
studying the masters of the Hawaiian slack key guitar tradition, as well as
recording them for Dancing Cat Records.
Winston was born in 1949 and grew up mainly in
Montana, splitting the rest of his formative years between
Mississippi and Florida. Inspired by
blues, rock, R&B and jazz, George began playing after high school in 1967
and started on organ and electric piano. In 1971, he switched to acoustic
piano. At that time, he began working on his own brand of pop instrumental
music on solo piano, putting together songs of his own and arranging other
pieces.
Tickets for this extraordinary Fall Blockbuster concert
performance are $24 (general admission) and $22 (for students/ seniors). For
