In conjunction with our proud announcement of a new policy regarding
tobacco use on the main campus, the college is presenting a lecture and
dialogue with Ty Patterson. This nationally recognized expert on tobacco
bans and will discuss the trend toward tobacco-free campuses and the
college’s decision to join the growing list of such campuses. This free
presentation will take place on Thursday, April 28 in Classroom
Building, Room 200 from 2:00-3:50 p.m. and again from 4-6:00 p.m. It is
open to everyone on the campus (students, staff, faculty and
administrators).
The college is initiating a change to our current policy regarding
tobacco use and details will be shared at this presentation. Your
participation is encouraged since faculty, staff and students will need
to share the responsibility for the future enforcement of this exciting
new policy.
Starting in the fall semester, staff will be trained on how to best
handle enforcement of the new policy and various workshops on relevant
issues will be offered. These will include tutorials on how to handle
enforcement, smoking cessation workshops, and health information
sessions on the negative effects of second hand smoke, which is the
primary reason for the new policy.
You are invited to participate as we work to formulate specifics of the
enforcement of the new rules, which will be phased in gradually starting
in the fall. Please join us at Ty Patterson’s presentation. Or join this
effort as a volunteer for our working subcommittees which will help
spread the word of this change and will be involved in the training and
education necessary for the success of this new policy. If you have
questions, or would like to volunteer to help, please contact Professor
Sheldon Malev via email or phone (ext. 6137).
The event is being sponsored by The President’s Advisory Committee on a
Tobacco-Free Campus, Faculty Senate, Student Government Association,
Staff Council, WCC FT (Faculty Union), and WCC CSEA (Staff Union).
Thank you for your interest. We hope to see you on Thursday, April 28.
